Westside Elementary Dress Code
It is important for your child to come to school each day dressed for the weather and in comfortable clothing that is modest and appropriate. Conditions throughout the school year range from hot (highs reaching into the 90's and above) to freezing cold (below 32 degrees). Here are some guidelines on how to dress at Westside Elementary.
Warm Months (typically August, September, and May)
Shorts may be worn, though they must be modest in length. A good way to judge whether or not shorts are too short is to have your child stand up straight with their arms straight down at their sides. The shorts should be LONGER than the end of their fingertips. Students are not allowed to wear tank-tops or any type of clothing that exposes their shoulders,
midriff, and back.
Cool Months (typically October, March & April)
Students should be prepared every day with a light coat, warm jacket, or
hoodie. Students will be required to go outside for recess most days and should be prepared for the changing weather during these months.
Cold Months (typically November, December, January & February)
Students should wear a warm coat to school each day and may also bring gloves, scarves, hats, and snow boots.
Temperature/Weather Guidelines:
When the weather is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, students will be given the option to stay inside during recess. If the temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, students will be required to stay inside. We will also not send students outside if rain or snow is falling hard enough to wet a student's hair or clothing. We offer games in the vestibule, quiet reading in the library, or homework lab as options for going outside on cold days.
Other Dress Code Policies:
Students may not wear hats or sunglasses in the school building during school hours unless it is for an approved school event or for medical/religious purposes.
Jewelry may not be worn in any pierced body part other than the ears.
Hair may not be styled in extreme fashions or colored in vibrant unnatural colors.
Clothing and personal items must be free from any pictures, words, or insignia considered vulgar or profane.
Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times to insure personal safety and hygiene.
